Councillor Thabo Manyoni is the Executive Mayor of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality. After matriculating with exemption in 1981, he completed an array of courses at some of South Africa’s leading tertiary institutions. After writing Economics and Sociology at Khanya College, he went on to pursue a BA degree at Witwatersrand University, where he was class representative of ELS, an executive member of the Cultural Committee in the Black Students Society, and a tutor to English I and II students. He obtained a diploma in Business Management, followed by a Voter Education Elections Manager Certificate, both from Damelin.
Manyoni has worked for some of the most influential institutions in our country. At the Matla Trust, he worked towards the empowerment of disadvantaged communities through education and training. He was also a deputy director at the IEC. He joined the Free State Provincial Government as the Director of Tourism and later became the CEO of the Free State Tourism Board.
Manyoni has served as City Manager of the Maluti-a-Phofung and Mangaung Local Municipalities. Following the 2009 general elections, he was elected as a Member of the Legislature and subsequently appointed MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, as well as the Leader of Government Business. He resigned from the Free State Provincial Government upon his election as the Executive Mayor of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality following the 2011 local government elections. He was elected as the National Chairperson of the South African Local Government Association during September 2011.
